Malt Barn

The oldest economic building in Palmse
The malt barn was located on the same site as early as 1753, but the stone building was completed in 1804, so it is one of the oldest surviving outbuildings in Palmse.

Multi-purpose house
The building was originally intended for drying barley and rye malt, which was used for the production of beer and vodka.
Due to the introduction of potatoes as a raw material in the distillery and the spread of industrial beer, the malt barn lost its function.
In 1823, a village school led by Zacharias Kranich started working in two rooms of the building, which later moved to Võhma.
In the second half of the 19th century, the families of the helper and shepherd lived here and the manor’s wood workshop was also located here.
The malt barn was restored in 2009 and today houses a training centre.
